I have had the book "Lettering as Drawing" by Nicolete Gray
for ages. It has a copyright of 1971. In it she explores the possibilities of what
hand drawn lettering can add to modern painting.
"Lettering can provide a discipline and precise
and sensitive drawing, and a repertory of abstract form
for the creative artist."
The book has beautiful examples of classic calligraphy, Gothic
handwriting styles, and modern forms of lettering.
I am starting to recognize definite cursive shapes in abstractions
made from altering photos to their threshold properties,
and have begun to explore this expression
in my painting.
Today I finished the above 5x7 gallery wrapped canvas.
The background is oil and wax and the lettering was made
with pen and ink.
I have an old ledger book that I am using to practice drawing alphabets.
The paper is great for ink and does not bleed through to the back side.
It feels like penmanship class all over again. I'm loving it!

I just picked up an old ledger...I am using it for my latest exhibit coming up in March 2014. I have seen this book at our library ...so when I get the move of my studio completed I will have to check this out. Letters are already an inspiration for me...thank you for sharing. Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart
