The Shapes of Dreams

The Shapes of Dreams
30x30 wood panel; oil and wax medium

I have been working on larger (for me) wood panels
and experimenting with shapes and faces,
enjoying bright colors, changing it all up a bit from my usual
abstractions. The summer is doing me good along with Spruce Studio
where I am loving to paint.

On another note....my intention for the summer was to catch up
on several visual journals, (including my digital journal),
but that is just not happening. I seem to lack the motivation
and energy to sustain that type of creative effort.
I've been re-reading Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's
"Creativity: Flow And The Psychology Of Discovery And Invention"
and finding lots of really useful suggestions for sustaining the
creative spirit. The most important is probably protecting the
channels of creativity  that you have by learning to escape outside
interruptions and temptations.  The surest way to zap
creativity is to compare yourself with others.
Another is to focus on what really matters,
learn to make choices based on your preferences,
not those of others. Keep doing what you love, more and more,
find something to like about routine tasks. Choose activities
that are inexhaustible, but keep them challenging.
Increase the complexity of our capacity to relate to the world.
Explore everything!
Go with the flow!
None of these concepts are new to me but sometimes
it is really important to recharge and renew.

Marie, I love this piece, great subject matter and the colors are wonderful. Although I do digital stamps which include often include people, it has really been a long time since I painted anything with people in it. Seeing your work makes me want to get back to this. I have become a follower of your blog through both Google and Bloglovin, hopefully this will remind me to come back and visit you again.

I haven't worked on wood in a very long time.. so different to paper or canvas in its feel.. might give it a go.. Thanks for the inspiration.

On another note...
Have you read "the artists way".. by Julia Cameron ?
If not I highly recommend it for recharging your creativity..

I think the key is to replenish the well.. as when we create we empty out.

Good luck with it all and don't be too hard on yourself

Thanks so much for following Cinnamon Chris, your comment is much appreciated!

Visual Communication, thanks for stopping by. I have read Julia Cameron's book and like what she says about doing the work and leaving the rest to the gods or something to that effect!
