I talked about my new series "Marks of Time: Beyond Aging"
in the post before last. Here I am showing
four in the order they were made.
So far I have finished eight, the most I've
ever made in a series, and it still feels like
there is more exploring to do. Most of them are done
on 20" by 24" wood panels, although some
are smaller, some made on canvas board.
I am using molding paste, gesso, liquid acrylics, charcoal pencils,
and alcohol inks., all my favorite materials.
The process is not complicated, but it is
very time consuming, and I like to focus on one
at a time and finish within one session.
I start by putting down a few colored shapes
on a textured white background and then
finding marks to draw in with the dark ink.
It has been interesting to limit myself to this series
as I am usually all over the board with my work,
and have in fact, resisted the idea of a "Body of Work".
But after working on the Marks of Time,
I can definitely see how an idea can be mined,
how one painting cannot answer all questions,
how a discipline can reveal much more than I ever
would have conceived without the work and limits.

I cannot tell you why but the last one really reaches out to me...body of work is an important journey as an artist. Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart
Thanks so much Mary Helen! I really appreciate your comment on my "fledgling" new series. It is hard to get a sense of how it is "flying" without feedback!
