I spent the week-end continuing my nature studies...
this time drawing dried Catalpa leaves. While their pungent scent
filled the studio, I was struck by
how unique each one was, their individual shape and curling,
the colors that remained, all individual presences.
I have not attempted such focused drawing in a long time
and it was not an easy process. The hand wants an effortless
depiction, while the eye insists on truth. At the same time,
trying to wrestle with detail vs. essence was frustrating and
I had to keep reminding myself to keep it loose.
In the end, I think I took the piece as far as I could.
Learning continues and practice is everything.

I like your last line: Learning continues and practice is everything! Rich studio days ahead.
I once did a study using my non-dominate (left) hand that turned out better than any I did with my dominate hand! I like the white bar along the bottom.
Marie, your skills in observation are evident in this study - the negative space, shadows, the translucent veins, contrasts. I also like the the composition.
just love this... and you really got it right... "the hand wants and effortless depiction, while the eye insists on truth." yes indeedy... love catalpa trees... x
Your painted image... is spectacular! Love the total experience with the scents of the curling leaves. Peace, Mary Helen
Thanks Blue Sky! Begin again is my motto.
Carole, I find working with my less dominant hand useful sometimes too.
Thanks so much Sylvia!Your thoughtful look at my piece is much appreciated.
Thanks Cat. The Catalpa is my favorite, love their giant green heart leaves in summer and their curly crunchiness in the fall.
Mary Helen, thank you for your kind words.
