Portrait in Pink
It has been ten years since my mother passed on. I still miss her most on Mothers' Day.
In honor of her and moms everywhere, I decided to post some photos of my mom, Mary Ascension.
One of the things I have most enjoyed painting is family members. I did this portrait after she died, the way I remember her as a little girl. She had bright red hair and wore a coppery shade of lipstick.

Bride 1942
This is a photo of her as a bride. It is a black and white photo hand colored by my aunt, Sister De Chantal. I think this picture is one of the reasons I love all things from the 1940's.

Second Grade at St. George's
This is my all time favorite picture of her as a second grader at St. George's school in Gardner, Colorado. She looks like she is trying out for the part of Little Orphan Annie!

Girl On A Swing, Mineral Palace Park
As a child, I loved looking at her photo album over and over again. I loved her hair, her clothes and the stories she told of her life as a young girl. The girl on the swing was another of my favorite photos. The above is a detail of a large portrait I painted. When my Dad saw it, he recognized it as her immediately and said "pretty nice!". Not a bad reaction!

Mom With Her Sisters
My Mom came from a huge family of thirteen but the above portarit came from a photo of her with three of her sisters. They were all pregnant at the same time & still they managed to look so young and fashionable, if a little peaked as well!
Memories are so nice to have; they warm my heart.
Here's wishing all mothers everywhere the happiest of days, and for all whose mothers have passed on, the warmest of memories.

What a magnificent tribute to your mom and to the idea of motherhood and family. You are blessed to have such warm memories, rich nostalgia, and the talent to communicate those things!
