Gray Day Abstraction

Yes, it has snowed here in Colorado! Too soon. Too soon. We had everything from icy rain to hail to great big raggedy wet flakes. It was a gray day and today looks like the same.

I spent the day in the studio cozy warm with the new furnace installed this summer. This painting looks nothing like the tantrum it started out being! I was feeling upset and unsettled with summer's very abrupt end and wanting to express an angry swirling storm but the images were messy and too obvious. I spent most of the day abstracting the piece, taking out and putting in shapes and marks. The colors were way too intense so I toned it all down. The above piece is small (12x10) on a birch board that I had texturized with modeling paste. I'm fairly certain I will leave it as is and am hoping to do somewhere "gray" paintings.
