Cooking, Cleaning and Mapping Along

Was able to spend some time in the studio over the last couple of days. Had to do some cleaning & reorganizing & came upon my great stash of ephemera, scraps of painted paper, rusted objects, etc. etc. There are lots of things I can throw out, but this collection is not going anywhere anytime soon! I love just going through the big plastic container & pulling out bits and pieces to collage. I made three small pieces using lots of texture & detail. I've learned from making both ATC's and small collages that the space can handle a lot of elements and can be very "busy" and still work, but when applied to larger pieces weigh them down. Usually more is better small where less is better big. Always depends on the piece though.

I try not to think much when doing these & try not to panic before I can "corral" all the elements. I always approach a project with a certainty that I can make it work, no matter how unlikely, or how much time it takes. The work is not always great but I always finish it & give it a chance. A piece always seems "cooked" to me when it is done, like when flour& sugar & eggs & butter turn into cake! (Of course, over cooking is always a danger!)
By the way, saw "Julia & Julie" last week end & loved it. Julia Child was art itself! (So is Meryl Streep!)

I did this piece with an eye toward "mapping". Some friends are coming over on Saturday & we are going to attempt to make personal art maps. I love the way of grids and crosses points in maps & found a tissue map of Paris in my stash. O happy day!

Great layering here. And what a cool use of "leftovers!"
