Coming home from a great 4 day getaway with my sister, I returned to the studio where the muses greeted me with their calm and unconditional acceptance; it is the place I feel most alive, most like myself, most welcome, most at home. This is my Blue Mona. Her eyes follow me around the room and the supportive energy that emerges from her presence always gives me such a boost. I wish I could capture her essence in photo form, but her little smile will have to do!
This is my Primavera lady. She sits on my old oak teachers desk in every light and shadow and dosn't mind the occasional silly hat I place on her head, or the countless unfinished paintings I offer to her for comment or suggestion.
I finished this "Earth Mother" painting in April. She has many layers of old lace and fabric covered over with gesso, paint, and photo transfers. It makes me sad that her profile turns toward some inner secret or suffering. She was my hommage to Earth Day and the message seems to be that there is much labor ahead.
The next three paintings are all my celebrations of artists that I admire. I tried to capture their style mixed with my interpretation. This is a 1920 something actress I painted apres Tamara Lempica. Shd adds a little glamour to my days along with the Sirius 40's radio station I tune into daily.
Amadeo Modigliani has inspired me more than any other artist. I have painted many of his ladies over and over again. This was an artist that loved women passionately and was a loving witness of the female graces in every portrait he painted. My painting is a collage to his companion who sat for him patient and pregnant and probably subconsciously aware of tragedy to come.
I have also painted lots of Picasso ladies. He was a master of the shadow side of women in love, betrayed or otherwise abandoned. I like the lady with the hat who seems to be decked out in camouflage and weeping. I recently saw the movie "He's Just Not In to You". Pablo offers enormous clues to the macho male/ adoring muse dynamic. This lady reminds me to keep in mind my own path as primary, to forge ahead regardless of the historic male genius propaganda that perpetuates western civilization. Our numbers are rising ladies, hold on!

This is great stuff Marie! I love your paintings! I have a book of Modigliani and his women paintings, which I just love. I look at the rich colors, the simplified forms, and take delight. Great post about your love of your studio.
