I've just returned from the beautiful town of Boulder
where the gorgeous Flat Iron hills surround the west side.
I was grand-cat sitting.
Ramona and Suki are royally raised!
A cat's life is plush alright.
Whilst there, I was unplugged from the 'net and TV,
surrounded by a big stack of new books and art magazines.
(Next to painting, my favorite thing in the world!)
So far, I have been reading Annie Dillard's "Living by Fiction".
I am a big fan of her writing and am enjoying what she has to say
about fiction writers paralleled with the art process of painters.
She has some really interesting things to say about art today:
"For the contemporary modernist....art itself is the theme,
and ironic, self-aware surfaces are the method."
Ouch! I will have to think that through, especially after
devouring two art mags that were new to me:
'Juxtapoz' and 'Direct Art'.
'Juxtapoz' uses the interview format to introduce contemporary artists
and 'Direct Art' is filled with artists quotes about their process.
Both are filled with fabulous photos of their work.
I have been reflecting a lot about where I want to go
with my art practice in the coming year, and spending lots
of time reading about what other artists have to say
has really been helpful.

have a wonderful time sharing the home with two lovely and very happy cats. I agree sitting in the sunshine and shadows is fun when you catch up on your favorite magazines and books. Blessings for the new 2012! Peace, mary Helen Fernandez Stewart
Ramona and Suki love your company also! We are receiving our first light snowfall today...so peaceful because I too am staying indoors. Peace, Mary Helen Fernandez Stewart
A perfect time to reflect and begin a direction with the inspiration gathered from these artists books. I think today I might go to the book store and pick up an art magazine...it has been too long.
Thanks Mary Helen! Winter does have some nice rewards especially indoors!
Enjoy the snow.
Blue Sky,I havn't subscribed to an art mag in years, but look at my old ones from time to time. It is really a revelation to see what is "out there" today. It all changes so fast.
