Shadow Land

 Shadow Land (detail)

There are times when my usually colorful pieces
abstain from being born,
when grays take over,
when my interior shadow land
rises
with dull wattage
and places of painful process
that want to be revisited.

Shadow Land, 24x18 canvas, mixed media

The thing about making art
from an intuitive level
is that it is
sometimes uncomfortably honest,
there is no place to hide
authentic feeling.
All of which puts
the decision to paint or not to paint
 up for grabs
when I'm feeling
rejection, repulsion, impoverished,
infantile, angry, or just plain
insane.
Anything can be used in the creative mix,
tantrum pieces can be good teachers.
The only thing that is a sure dead stopper
is apathy,
a heart that has been bolted shut.
Everything else is grist for the creative mill.

You are very productive in your studio. I begin a piece but it takes several days of going back, writing and working before the words "done" can be spoken. This shadow piece is strong and I like the left side so much!

Very productive indeed! I'd hoped to get a lot (or something) done in my studio over the long weekend, but instead I spent my time looking at other artists' work at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Fabulously unique work there this year.

I love this piece! Love all the texture and muted colors, but for it's the shadow face that makes it. That face just pops for me and pulls me right in.

BlueSky, this piece underwent several transformations over a three day period & was about an inch away from turning to mud!I even lost sleep over it! So I completely understand your process!

Paula: I would have recognized your "anonymous" comment anywhere!
I am looking forward to your seeing all my finished work. This piece goes into the 367 file of emotional mapping!

Beautiful and poignant words corresponding to your art work and your art process. I whole heartedly agree with what you've said about working with whatever feelings are within you when you are creating. When a piece isn't quite how I want it, i put it down and go back to it at a later date with a fresh pair of eyes and mind. Almost always, i love the changes that I then make. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
