I have been reading Michael Kimmelman's The Accidental Masterpiece and the book has been both enlightening and entertaining. It has a real grounding to the sometimes lofty/highbrow image of art in contemporary cutlture.

There is an art to making anything from the fantastical to the uplifted mudane.

Kimmelman says: "Certain artists have optimistically imagined art to be a state of mind, something that might just reside in our heads. Life itself might be a work of art. That has been one of modern art's most radical propositions."
