The above image is a Waterhouse painting over laid with a photo of our scrub oak branches.
Lately I have become enchanted with the way the scrub oak grows, every which way: a gnarl, a nest, a tangle of arms lifting up to the sky, towards the arms of Mother Nature.

Earlier this month we pruned a grove of scrubs which had become overgrown, bushy and dense. As we clipped away the dead and low hung branches the golden light of autumn spilled into the clearing and I became enchanted with the slender dancing "trees" that remained.
I tried to capture the grove in the impressionistic painting above & was inspired to do a series of landscapes. I want to do some long panels but have not as yet been able to find what I have in mind.

This is my second attempt at the scrub oak grove, a softer close up version.

love them all Marie, love the sinewy and lithe look and love it that you did three very different impressions of the feelings that they evoke for you!
I love all of these too. The differing styles provide such contrast when viewed together. Great subject for exploration, great forms!
Marie, is that first impressionistic painting an encaustic? It looks like that sort of texture. I want to touch it!
